Things to Do in Canggu

Canggu's surf crowd has a clear hit list: Batu Bolong waves, black-sand beaches, and cafés that turn into sunset bars. Here's what's actually worth your time, ranked and judged.

Canggu in brief

What is Canggu famous for?

Canggu is famous for surf, a lively beach atmosphere, nightlife, and its dense concentration of cafés and restaurants.

How should I spend one day in Canggu?

Start with the beach or a surf lesson, take lunch at a café, walk the rice-field lanes in the cooler part of the day, then finish with sunset and nightlife.

Is Canggu worth visiting in Bali?

Yes if you want surf, cafés, a social beach scene, and nightlife. It is a poor fit if your priority is quiet or traditional Bali.

How Canggu fits together

Canggu is a loose coastal patchwork of surf beaches, busy lanes, cafés, villas, and surviving rice fields rather than a compact resort center.

Batu Bolong is the social core, with its main surf break, cafés, boutiques, bars, Old Man's, and The Lawn. Echo Beach sits northwest at the end of Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan. Berawa lies southeast toward Seminyak, while Pererenan and Seseh continue west and north as a quieter stretch. Rice fields still cut through Berawa, Batu Bolong, and Echo Beach. Tanah Lot is a separate Tabanan excursion, not a Canggu sight.

Getting around

Getting around Canggu

  • Walk the coastal core

Batu Bolong, Old Man's, The Lawn, and nearby beach access sit close enough to combine on foot.

  • Scooter for the outer beaches

Use a scooter or private driver for Berawa and Pererenan when traffic makes walking less appealing.

  • Cycle the farm lanes

The rice fields are best reached on foot or by bicycle; cars struggle on the narrow shortcuts.

  • Do not rush the water

Batu Bolong, Echo, Berawa, and Pererenan all have surf hazards and should not be treated as guaranteed swimming beaches.
