Things to Do in Ishigaki

Yaeyama's tropical gateway has a clear priority list: Kabira Bay, manta-filled reefs, and ferries to traditional island villages. Here's what's actually worth your time, ranked and judged.

Ishigaki in brief

What is Ishigaki known for?

Clear-water coves, coral reefs, marine activities, and its role as the gateway to the wider Yaeyama Islands. Kabira Bay is the signature view, while the surrounding reefs make Ishigaki a serious snorkeling and diving base.

Where is Ishigaki Island?

Ishigaki sits in Okinawa Prefecture's far-southern Yaeyama Islands. It is a separate island, not part of Okinawa's main island, and works as the region's main arrival and ferry hub.

What is the best time to visit Ishigaki?

Spring and autumn are the easiest all-round choices for sightseeing, while summer is strongest for beach and marine days. Okinawa's rainy season is typically mid-May to late June, so keep the forecast in the plan.

Get oriented

How Ishigaki fits together

Ishigaki is the largest practical base in the Yaeyama Islands, with city life and the ferry terminal on the southwest coast and beaches, reefs, and viewpoints spread around the island.

Ishigaki City is the useful center for restaurants, hotels, buses, and departures to Taketomi, Iriomote, and other islands. Kabira Bay and Sukuji Beach sit on the northwest coast, while Yonehara Beach is farther east along the north shore. The island's roads reward a rental car, especially if you want to connect beaches and the northern cape in one day. New Ishigaki Airport is on the southeast side and is roughly an hour by air from Naha, not a ferry or road connection from Okinawa's main island. Treat the ferry terminal as the start of your Yaeyama day trips, not as a sightseeing substitute for them.

Start with the island's signature bay, then work through beaches and reef water before using the city ferry hub for a longer island day:

Getting around

Getting around Ishigaki

  • Fly from Naha

Ishigaki is a separate far-southern island, not part of Okinawa's main island. The supplied route information describes the flight from Naha as about one hour.

  • Rent a car for the island

A car is the most flexible way to connect Kabira Bay, Sukuji Beach, Yonehara Beach, and the northern viewpoints. The island's official guide describes a full-day drive for its roughly 160-kilometer circumference.

  • Use buses for key stops

Buses connect the city with major sights, though some routes involve transfers and walking. Kabira is about 45 minutes from the city by bus, while Sukuji's route includes a transfer and a 30-minute walk from Kabira Park.

  • Use the port for island hopping

Ishigaki Port is the base for ferries to Taketomi, Iriomote, and other Yaeyama islands. Timetables vary by route and season, and weather can alter service, so check before departure.

Ishigaki City and Misaki-cho

The practical base for restaurants, buses, the ferry terminal, and early departures to Taketomi or Iriomote. Best for a car-free trip or island hopping.

Kabira

The scenic northwest base, close to Kabira Bay, Sukuji Beach, and the manta-diving area. Quieter and more nature-focused than the city.

Airport and southeast coast

Convenient for arrival and departure, with easier access to New Ishigaki Airport than the city or Kabira. Choose it for logistics rather than nightlife.

Who it's for

Ishigaki for families, couples, and friends

Ishigaki for families
Sukuji's shallow, calm water and Kabira's glass-bottom boats are the easiest wins. Yonehara can work too, but stay inside jellyfish-netted areas and bring appropriate footwear for the rough shore.
Ishigaki for couples
Pair Kabira Bay with a slow drive to Sukuji for sunset, then keep one day for Taketomi's white-sand village streets. Ishigaki is strongest when you leave room for weather and unplanned coast time.
Ishigaki for a group of friends
Book a manta dive, rent a car, and use the ferry terminal for a Taketomi or Iriomote day. The island gives a group more variety than simply repeating beach days.
