Okinawa's neighborhoods, mapped
Okinawa's main island works as a chain of travel bases: Naha for markets and history, Chatan for waterfront evenings, Onna for beaches and snorkeling, and Motobu for the aquarium and northern coast. Yomitan, Southern Okinawa, Ishigaki and Miyakojima each add a different pace, so choose your area before stacking attractions.

Naha
Markets, Shuri heritage, Okinawa soba and the prefecture's easiest car-free base.

American Village (Chatan)
Colorful waterfront shops, cafés, entertainment and sunsets in Chatan.

Onna
Resort beaches, Cape Manzamo and the Blue Cave along the central coast.

Motobu
Churaumi Aquarium, Emerald Beach and the shaded Bise village road.

Yomitan
Clifftop sunsets, castle ruins and working pottery studios on the west coast.

Southern Okinawa
Peace museums, sacred sites and coastal history south of Naha.

Ishigaki
A practical island base for Kabira Bay, manta dives and ferries to Taketomi.

Miyakojima
Long beaches, blue-water bridges, reefs and open coastal drives.

Three days is enough for a focused main-island trip, with Naha, the central coast and one northern day. Four to seven days let you slow down in Onna or Motobu, add Southern Okinawa, or fly to Ishigaki or Miyakojima instead of trying to cover every island.

Where to stay
Where to stay in Okinawa
The best base depends on your route: Naha suits car-free city days, Chatan suits sunsets and nightlife, Onna suits resort beaches, and Motobu suits the aquarium and northern coast. Ishigaki and Miyakojima deserve their own stays, not a rushed excursion from the main island.

Know before you go
Okinawa travel essentials
Start with the season, transport and water conditions, then budget for a rental car or island flights and ferries. Naha's Yui Rail is useful inside the city, but beyond Naha a car is usually the practical choice, with the main island taking about two hours from Naha to Churaumi.
When to visit
Beach season runs roughly April to October, while mild winter brings whale watching and fewer beach days.
Okinawa costs
Plan for a rental car, fuel, resort or island stays, and marine activities alongside everyday local meals.
Best beaches
Compare Onna's managed resort beaches, Motobu's family-friendly Emerald Beach and Miyakojima's long white-sand shores.
Best islands
Pick the Keramas for a Naha boat day, Ishigaki for island hopping, or Miyakojima for a beach-first stay.
What to eat
Try Okinawa soba, taco rice, market seafood, rafute and island produce in Naha and beyond.
Best snorkeling
The Blue Cave, Keramas, Ishigaki and Miyakojima each offer a different route into Okinawa's reefs.
