Best Okinawa Islands

From Kerama Blue and white-sand beaches to preserved Ryukyu villages and jungle waterways, these are the Okinawa islands worth planning around.

Okinawa in brief

What is the best Okinawa island to visit?

There is no single best choice. Start with the Kerama Islands for snorkeling and winter whales, choose Miyako for white-sand beaches, Ishigaki as a Yaeyama base, Taketomi for Ryukyu village scenery, or Iriomote for jungle and kayaking.

Can you visit the Kerama Islands as a day trip from Naha?

Yes. Ferries and boat trips leave from Naha, with high-speed services reaching Tokashiki in about 40 minutes and Zamami in about 50–70 minutes. Check the seasonal timetable and reserve seats ahead.

Which Okinawa islands have the best beaches?

Miyako is the strongest beach-first choice, especially for the seven-kilometer Yonaha Maehama Beach. The Keramas are better for clear-water reef time, while Ishigaki combines beaches with access to the wider Yaeyama group.

The islands are the point

Okinawa is best understood as an archipelago, not a single resort strip. This list rewards islands that give you a distinct reason to cross the water or take the flight: Kerama Blue, long white-sand beaches, preserved Ryukyu villages, or jungle waterways. It also calls out the easy access and the tradeoffs, because a postcard beach is less useful if the ferry sells out or the island needs a rental car.

We grouped the picks into near-Naha reef islands, easy northern escapes, and the far-south islands that deserve more time. Pair them with things to do in Naha, Okinawa beaches, Okinawa snorkeling, where to stay in Okinawa, and our Okinawa 7-day itinerary.

Shimajiri · Kerama Islands Worth the hype

    Kerama Islands

The best all-around island choice from Okinawa Main Island, especially for clear water and a first taste of island hopping.

The Kerama Islands earn the top spot because they deliver Okinawa's defining experience without demanding a flight. This archipelago of more than 20 islands sits roughly 30–40 kilometers north of Naha, and its reefs support approximately 250 coral species. The water has its own useful nickname, Kerama Blue, while humpback whales arrive in winter to breed. High-speed ferries from Tomari Port reach Tokashiki in about 40 minutes, Zamami in 50–70 minutes, and Aka in about 50 minutes, with roughly one to three departures daily depending on the island. The catch is planning: schedules and seats matter, especially in peak seasons. For a first island day, start here.

Where: 30–40 km north of Naha
Getting there: Ferry from Tomari Port
Best time: Winter for humpback whales
Good to know: More than 20 islands; four inhabited

Kerama · Zamami Island Worth it

    Zamami Island

Choose Zamami for the most rounded small-island day, with beaches, hills, and a village feel close to the port.

Zamami is the Kerama island I would choose when the day should include more than a single swim. Furuzamami Beach stretches for more than 800 meters, and Ama Beach gives you another designated swimming area, while the hilly island is manageable by electric bike, rental car, or local bus. The port has free Wi-Fi, but most shops accept cash, and bus service needs checking at the tourist information center. High-speed ferries take roughly 50–70 minutes from Naha, and the Queen Zamami and Ferry Zamami 3 can sell out, so book ahead. Around January to April, humpback whales seasonally visit the surrounding waters. Look for the Marilyn statue near the port, facing Aka Island.

    Where: Zamami Village, Shimajiri
Getting there: 50–70 minutes by high-speed ferry
Beach: Furuzamami Beach, over 800 m
    Whales: Around January–April

Kerama · Tokashiki Island Worth it

    Tokashiki Island

Tokashiki is the practical beach pick for a quick ferry day, particularly if sea turtles and Aharen Beach are priorities.

Tokashiki is the largest island in the Keramas and the easiest recommendation for travelers who want beach time with minimal fuss. The high-speed ferry from Tomari Port takes about 35 minutes, while the regular ferry takes about 70 minutes. From Tokashiki Port, Aharen Beach is less than 15 minutes by taxi or local bus, and Tokashiku Beach is noted for sea-turtle sightings. The limitation is mobility: buses are infrequent, evening dining is limited, and the island has no large resort. Snorkeling from shore at Tokashiku is possible, but from mid-April through October the lifeguarded area restricts it outside the buoyed zone after 9 a.m. The kayak route toward Hanari Island crosses about 800 meters of reef water.

Getting there: 35 min high-speed ferry
    Best base: Aharen Beach
Wildlife: Sea turtles at Tokashiku Beach
    Whales: January–April

The northern islands, easy on the logistics

Bridge-connected Kouri and ferry-served Ie make rewarding additions to a main-island road trip without requiring a flight.

  1. Ie Island in OkinawaIe Island in OkinawaIe Island in Okinawa

Northern Okinawa · Ie Village Mixed

    Ie Island

Ie is the most characterful northern ferry escape, especially in spring when its lily fields turn the island into a flower trip.

Ie Island is a better fit for a curious road-tripper than for someone chasing the easiest beach. The ferry from Motobu Port takes about 30 minutes, and you can bring a vehicle, rent a bicycle near the terminal, or hire a car on arrival. Mt. Gusuku, known locally as Tacchu, rises 172 meters and gives a 360-degree panorama, while Nyatiya Cave, the Thousand-Man Cave, sheltered evacuees during World War II. The seasonal draw is Lily Field Park, where around one million white Easter lilies bloom alongside roughly 100 rare and exotic varieties during the main mid- to late-April and early-May season. Ie also produces Ie Beef and Ie Rum Santa Maria. Parking at Motobu can be difficult, so do not treat the ferry as a spontaneous afterthought.

Getting there: 30 min ferry from Motobu
High point: Mt. Gusuku, 172 m
    Best season: Mid-April–early May lilies
Local tastes: Ie Beef and Ie Rum

  2. Kouri Island in OkinawaKouri Island in OkinawaKouri Island in Okinawa
    9
    Northern Okinawa · Nakijin Mixed

    Kouri Island

Kouri is the convenient scenic stop, best for a bridge drive and Heart Rock rather than a secluded-island fantasy.

Kouri Island belongs near the bottom because it is more accessible attraction than remote escape, but that is exactly its strength. The roughly two-kilometer Kouri Bridge connects it to Yagaji Island, which connects by road to Okinawa's main island. From Naha, the drive takes about two hours, and once on Kouri you can circle the small island in roughly 15 minutes. Tinu Beach's two naturally sculpted heart-shaped rocks are the headline, while Kouri Ocean Tower adds an 82-meter viewpoint and a seashell museum holding more than 10,000 shells. Kouri Beach, at the bridge, has cafes and eateries. Other beaches including Tokei, Peace, and Tinu have no facilities or lifeguards, so the island is better for a short scenic stop than an all-day beach plan.

    Where: Nakijin, northern Okinawa
Getting there: About 2 hr drive from Naha
Signature: Heart Rock at Tinu Beach
On-island drive: Roughly 15 minutes around

The far-south islands, give them time

Miyako, Ishigaki, Taketomi, and Iriomote are not casual add-ons, but each offers a more specific landscape and a stronger case for staying over.

  1. Miyako Island in OkinawaMiyako Island in OkinawaMiyako Island in Okinawa
    4
    Miyako · Miyakojima Mixed

    Miyako Island

Miyako is the strongest beach-first choice, but it works best as a proper island stay rather than a rushed side trip.

Miyako Island takes the beach crown for sheer coastal range. Yonaha Maehama Beach stretches seven kilometers, and the island's coral reefs, snorkeling, diving, mangoes, Miyako beef, and Miyako soba give the trip more texture than a resort-only stay. The bridges are part of the experience: Irabu Bridge spans 3,540 meters and links Miyako to a neighboring island, while Sunayama Beach hides beyond a narrow tunnel of trees before opening onto a small cove with an arch-shaped rock. Flights from Naha take about 45 minutes, and a rental car is the sensible way to cover the island, which can take roughly three to four hours to drive around. Come for beaches from April through November, with mango season in June through August.

    Beach: Yonaha Maehama, 7 km
Getting there: About 45 min by air from Naha
    Getting around: Rental car recommended
    Mango season: June–August

  2. Ishigaki Island in OkinawaIshigaki Island in OkinawaIshigaki Island in Okinawa
    5
    Yaeyama · Ishigaki City Mixed

    Ishigaki Island

Ishigaki is the best base for a multi-island trip, with enough on the main island to justify a day before the ferries begin.

Ishigaki is less about one isolated beach than about access and range. It is the main island and transport hub of the Yaeyama Islands, with New Ishigaki Airport connections from Naha and major Japanese cities, plus ferries onward to places such as Taketomi and Iriomote. A full-day drive around its 160-kilometer circumference is practical, while most attractions near Ishigaki City sit within a 30–45-minute drive. Kabira Bay is the telling stop: it is one of only two black-pearl cultivation sites in Japan, and swimming, snorkeling, and diving are prohibited, so you see the bay from a 30-minute glass-bottom boat. Reef manta rays are present year-round, with the best viewing chances from July to mid-October. Use Ishigaki as a gateway, not just a layover.

    Role: Yaeyama transport hub
    Airport: New Ishigaki Airport
Kabira Bay: Glass-bottom boats; no swimming
    Manta rays: Best chances July–mid-October

  3. Taketomi Island in OkinawaTaketomi Island in OkinawaTaketomi Island in Okinawa
    6
Yaeyama · Taketomi Town Worth the hype

    Taketomi Island

Taketomi is the most rewarding culture-focused half-day from Ishigaki, provided you treat its village as a living place rather than a backdrop.

Taketomi makes the strongest case for Okinawa's Ryukyu heritage. Its preserved village is built from traditional red-tiled wooden houses, limestone walls, white coral-sand streets, and shisa guardian statues, while the island's minsah weaving keeps local craft visible. The high-speed boat from Ishigaki Port takes about 10–15 minutes, and Taketomi Port is roughly a 15-minute walk from the village. Rent a bicycle for the six-kilometer Natural Education Walking Path, then use Kondoi Beach for calm, shallow bathing water. Kaiji Beach is not a swimming beach because of strong currents. At the star-sand shore, the grains are pointed husks from tiny foraminifera, but taking them is prohibited. Taketomi is compact, memorable, and easy to combine with an Ishigaki stay.

Getting there: 10–15 min boat from Ishigaki
Village: 15 min walk from port
    Beach: Kondoi for calm bathing
Culture: Red roofs and coral-sand streets

  4. Iriomote Island in OkinawaIriomote Island in OkinawaIriomote Island in Okinawa
    7
    Yaeyama · Iriomote Island Mixed

    Iriomote Island

Choose Iriomote for active nature, not easy beach lounging: its payoff is jungle, mangroves, and guided water travel.

Iriomote is the island for travelers who would rather paddle than sit still. Nearly 90 percent of the island is dense jungle and mangrove forest, and Pinaisara Falls drops 55 meters, the tallest waterfall in Okinawa Prefecture. Access is by high-speed ferry from Ishigaki, taking about 35–40 minutes to Ohara Port or 45–50 minutes to Uehara Port. The public bus is sparse, running four times daily between Shirahama and Ohara, so a rental car or guided tour makes far more sense. Kayak tours run around two hours, while half-day Pinaisara Falls trips are available. The water-buffalo cart across the shallow strait to Yubujima is a gentler add-on, with drivers sometimes explaining the island's history while playing sanshin. Iriomote rewards time and planning.

Landscape: Nearly 90% jungle and mangroves
Getting there: 35–50 min ferry from Ishigaki
Active days: Kayak and waterfall tours
    Wildlife: Iriomote yamaneko

For a first trip, take a ferry to the Keramas from Naha, then choose one southern base only if you have enough nights to make the flight worthwhile. Pick Miyako for beaches, Ishigaki for connections, Taketomi for Ryukyu scenery, and Iriomote for active nature. Rankings and verdicts are our own; where shown, star ratings open each spot's Google listing, and details shift by season, so confirm before you go.
