Things to Do in Motobu Okinawa
Motobu Okinawa is where giant aquariums meet: whale sharks, fukugi tree lanes, coral beaches, and the turquoise road to Kouri Island. Here's what's actually worth your time, ranked and judged.
Motobu in brief
What are some fun things to do in Motobu, Okinawa?
Start at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, then walk the Bise Fukugi Tree Avenue, swim at Emerald Beach when it is in season, and make time for the nearby Nakijin Castle ruins or Kouri Island.
What is the main attraction in Motobu?
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the headline, especially the Kuroshio Sea tank, where whale sharks and manta rays move behind one enormous acrylic window inside Ocean Expo Park.
How long does it take to get from Naha to Motobu?
Plan on roughly 90 minutes by car in good conditions. Buses toward nearby Nago take about two to three hours, and local service around the peninsula is infrequent, so a car makes the outlying beaches much easier.

How Motobu Okinawa fits together
Motobu occupies the northwestern peninsula of Okinawa's main island, with Ocean Expo Park on the coast and beaches, villages, and island roads spreading around it.
Ocean Expo Park is the practical center of a Motobu day. The aquarium, Emerald Beach, the Tropical Dream Center, and the Native Okinawan Village all sit inside its long coastal grounds. Bise is immediately north, where a residential village is shaded by fukugi windbreaks and the road continues toward Cape Bisezaki. Sesoko Island is south across its 762-meter bridge. Motobu Genki Village sits near the aquarium and is geared toward booked marine and cultural activities. Kouri Island and Nakijin Castle are nearby excursions rather than compact downtown stops, so driving is the sensible way to combine them. Without a car, base near Ocean Expo Park and use buses selectively.
A north-coast loop that starts with the big attraction, then slows down through villages, beaches, and the peninsula's quieter edges:

Ocean Expo Park Worth the hypeOkinawa Churaumi Aquarium
The giant Kuroshio Sea tank is still the one Motobu attraction that justifies the drive from Naha.
Part of Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium was rebuilt in 2002 and now presents 780 species of marine life. The Kuroshio Sea tank is the reason to come: whale sharks, manta rays, and migratory fish move behind a single acrylic window 8.2 meters high and 22.5 meters wide. The aquarium also reaches into coral and deep-sea habitats, including a naturally lit 300-cubic-meter Coral Sea tank and an exhibit for creatures living 200 to 700 meters below the surface. Buses from Naha take about two and a half hours, while driving takes about two hours before congestion. Allow extra time from the parking area. It is crowded, but the scale is not a gimmick.

Bise Worth itBise Fukugi Tree Road
The best antidote to aquarium crowds is this shaded, still-living village where the trees do the architecture.
Bise is a traditional seaside community beside the aquarium, arranged in a grid around roughly 230 to 250 homes. Fukugi trees were planted and maintained as windbreaks against Okinawa's typhoons, and around 20,000 of them now form green tunnels through the village. The main tree-lined route is about one kilometer, free, and open at any time, with the coast and views toward Ie Island at the far end. Some trees are estimated to be more than 300 years old, while local tourism material says the community has treasured its customs for 400 years. Walk quietly: this is still residential, not a theme park. The Meoto Fukugi pair near the entrance, said to represent harmonious marriage, is the one small detail worth seeking out.

Ocean Expo Park Worth the hypeEmerald Beach
The easiest beautiful beach in Motobu, especially when you want swimming facilities without giving up the lagoon setting.
Emerald Beach sits beside Ocean Expo Park, about a seven-minute walk from Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. Its Y-shaped coral-sand shoreline wraps around a lagoon and is divided into three named sections: Beach of Play, Beach of Rest, and Beach of View. The water has Japan's top AA bathing-water rating, and the beach is protected by a jellyfish-prevention net with lifeguards on duty. Swimming is permitted only at Asobi Beach, and the listed swimming season is April through October, so do not treat the photographs as a promise of year-round beach time. Swimming and showers are free; lockers are 100 yen. Snorkeling is prohibited. It can feel packaged beside the aquarium, but that is precisely why it works for families and short itineraries.

Motobu coast Worth itOcean Expo Park
Treat the park as Motobu's whole coastal campus, not merely the grounds around the aquarium.
Ocean Expo Park was established to commemorate the Okinawa International Ocean Expo held in 1975, with the park built in 1976. It stretches about three kilometers along the coast and contains enough separate attractions to fill the edges of an aquarium day: the Native Okinawan Village, the Oceanic Culture Museum, botanical gardens, Emerald Beach, and the Tropical Dream Center. That last stop has a 36-meter observatory tower shaped like the Tower of Babel and greenhouses displaying more than 2,000 orchids year-round. Entry to the grounds is free, while individual attractions charge separately. A trolley serves 13 stops, useful when heat or small children make the long coastal footprint feel less idyllic. The park's scale is its strength and its trap: choose two or three stops instead of trying to conquer everything.

Sesoko Island MixedSesoko Beach
A good accessible island beach, though its facilities and paid parking make it less secret than the photos suggest.
Sesoko Beach gives Motobu an easy island escape: Sesoko Island is connected to the main island by the 762-meter Sesoko Bridge, and the beach is about a 15-minute drive from Churaumi Aquarium. The natural sand runs for approximately 800 meters, with Ie Island and Minna Island visible offshore. Changing rooms, showers, lockers, a lifeguard, and a food concession make it practical, while pets are allowed outside the swimming area. Swimming season runs from mid-April through mid-October; listed hours are 9 AM to 5 PM, extending to 6 PM from July through September. Admission is free, but parking is 1,000 yen per day, showers cost 500 yen, and lockers cost 200 yen. The coral reef about 500 meters offshore can be reached on foot at low tide, but the overall experience is more managed than remote.

Kouri Island Worth the hypeKouri Island
The turquoise bridge and Heart Rock are tourist magnets for a reason, but the island works best when you keep driving after the photo stop.
Kouri Island is a nearby excursion reached from Yagaji Island by the approximately two-kilometer Kouri Bridge. The small, roughly circular island can be driven around in about 15 minutes, with Kouri Beach at the bridge and quieter beaches farther around the coast. Tinu Beach is the famous stop: two wave-sculpted rocks overlap into a heart, with a second upside-down heart appearing in the gap. That formation helped give Kouri its “Love Island” nickname and became popular after appearing in a Japanese airline commercial. The island's folklore goes further, associating Chigunu Beach with two lovers in a sea cave at the birth of mankind. Tinu Beach has no facilities or lifeguards, so bring the right expectations. Kouri is photogenic and easy to overrate if you only chase the landmark, but a slow coastal drive earns the detour.

Bisezaki Worth itCape Bisezaki
Come for the low-tide walk to Miiugan, not for a polished lookout, and let the reef decide the schedule.
Cape Bisezaki is the northwestern tip of the Motobu Peninsula, beyond the Bise fukugi lanes on increasingly narrow roads. Parking costs 500 yen, and the cape itself is open around the clock. At low tide, the exposed coral reef leads on foot to Miiugan, a small offshore island whose reef is dotted with hot seawater puddles described as natural ocean-side onsens. That detail sounds improbable until you see the reef in the right conditions. At high tide the current makes the crossing unsafe, so check tide times rather than improvising from a photograph. The nearby Bise settlement preserves roughly 18,000 fukugi trees, historically used as fences and windbreaks. Cape Bisezaki is a strong add-on after Bise, but a poor choice if your schedule cannot bend around the tide.

Hamamoto Worth itMotobu Genki Village
A bookable, activity-heavy marine center that makes sense for families who want to do something rather than only look at the sea.
Motobu Genki Village is a wellness and recreational complex managed by the Oceanic Wellness Foundation, next to Marine Piazza Okinawa. It offers about 60 programs spanning Okinawan culture, Yanbaru nature, and the ocean, including dolphin encounters, yacht sailing, sunset cruises, kayaking, semi-submarine coral viewing, and craft workshops. The facility is open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM, and reservations are recommended, particularly for dolphin programs. The strongest telling detail is the 90-minute Dolphin Adventure: eligible participants can hold a dolphin's dorsal fin and ride on its back, but they must be at least six years old, 130 centimeters tall, and able to swim 25 meters unaided. That makes the place more structured than spontaneous beach time, and prices vary sharply by program. Choose it for a planned family experience, not a casual walk-in.

Getting around Motobu Okinawa
Drive if you want the full peninsula
Driving from Naha takes about two hours to the aquarium in light traffic and can take longer with congestion. A car is especially useful for Bise, Cape Bisezaki, Sesoko, and nearby island roads.
Buses work, but require patience
The Yanbaru Express Bus connects Naha and the Motobu area, with the trip to the aquarium taking about two and a half hours. Local service around the peninsula is infrequent.
Cluster the Ocean Expo stops
Emerald Beach is about a seven-minute walk from Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, while Bise is close enough to combine with the aquarium by car or bus.
Use the park trolley for distance
Ocean Expo Park's trolley serves 13 stops and costs 300 yen per ride or 500 yen for a one-day pass. Wheelchairs and baby carriages are available to rent free, first come, first served.
Where to stay
Where to stay in Motobu Okinawa
Ocean Expo Park and Bise
The best base for early aquarium visits, Emerald Beach, and the fukugi village. Coastal hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals make this the most useful sightseeing zone.
Motobu town and Hamamoto
A more practical base for driving around the peninsula and reaching Motobu Genki Village, with fewer attractions immediately outside the door.
Sesoko Island
Choose Sesoko for a beach-first stay and an island feel, accepting that the swimming facilities are seasonal and the main sightseeing cluster is a drive away.
Kouri Island
A scenic choice for bridge, beach, and sunset views, with luxury hotels and rental villas but limited budget options.

Motobu for families, couples, and friends
- Motobu for families
- The aquarium, Emerald Beach's netted swimming area, and Ocean Expo Park's trolley create an unusually easy family day. Genki Village adds bookable marine activities for children who need more than exhibits.
- Motobu for couples
- Walk Bise under the fukugi trees, time Cape Bisezaki for low tide, then drive toward Kouri Island for the heart-shaped rocks and turquoise bridge. The best moments are outside the headline attraction.
- Motobu for a group of friends
- Rent a car and make a loose coastal loop: aquarium, Bise, Sesoko Beach, and Kouri Island. The group advantage is flexibility, especially when beaches and reef crossings depend on season and tide.
