Yes, 2 days is enough in Reykjavik for the compact downtown sights and a Golden Circle day trip, but not for Iceland's farther coasts. Three days gives you a slower city visit or a second short outing; five days adds the South Coast and more geothermal bathing; seven days lets you explore beyond the usual first-timer circuit at a calmer pace.

Spend your first day walking central Reykjavik from Hallgrímskirkja to the waterfront, then finish with a local pool and Icelandic dinner. Use day two for the Golden Circle, linking Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, Friðheimar, and Kerið.

What to do, what to skip

Three worth doing

  • Walk from Hallgrímskirkja down Laugavegur to the waterfront because central Reykjavik is compact and easy to enjoy on foot
  • Join a local pool session at Sundhöll Reykjavíkur because the hot tubs are a more everyday Icelandic experience than a resort spa
  • Take the Golden Circle early because Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss pack Icelandic history and geology into one day

One to skip

  • Skip adding the Blue Lagoon because it consumes too much of a two-day Reykjavik trip and costs more than the city pool

Day 1: miðborg and reykjavík waterfront

Downtown landmarks, local streets, a geothermal pool, and dinner

Morning

Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík

Daily 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM$104.6(28,833)

Arrive around 9:00am, before the church fills, and look up at the organ and pale concrete interior before paying for the tower. From the viewing level, stand by the windows facing the colorful center and bay; skip rushing straight back outside.

Laugavegur Street and Rainbow Street, Reykjavík

Open 24 hoursFree4.6(4,025)

Walk downhill along Skólavörðustígur and Rainbow Street, then continue west on Laugavegur around 10:00am when more shops are open. Browse Icelandic wool and design stores, but save suitcase space by choosing one useful knit.

Afternoon

Sun Voyager, Reykjavík

Open 24 hoursFree4.5(10,395)

Reach the waterfront in the afternoon and stand slightly east of the sculpture so its steel ribs frame the bay and mountains. Spend 15 minutes here, then keep walking rather than waiting for a perfect empty photograph.

Harpa Concert Hall, Reykjavík

Free4.6(9,422)

Go inside during the afternoon opening window and walk through the public foyer to see the colored glass from different angles. Stand near the harbor-facing windows for the clearest view of the facade and water; skip paying for a performance unless you already want one.

Evening

Sundhöll Reykjavíkur, Reykjavík

$124.7(1,226)

Arrive around 6:00pm with a swimsuit and towel, then move between the pool and hot tubs rather than treating it like a quick swim. Shower without your swimsuit before entering, and leave enough time to dry off before dinner.

Grillmarkaðinn, Reykjavík

$854.6(2,952)

Reserve a 7:30pm table and choose the shared tasting menu for a broad introduction to Icelandic ingredients. If ordering à la carte, ask for a grilled local specialty and one vegetable side, and do not skip the open-grill flavors.

Day 2: golden circle: þingvellir, haukadalur, and southern bláskógabyggð

Iceland's essential day trip through a national park, geothermal fields, waterfall, greenhouse lunch stop, and crater

Morning

Þingvellir National Park, Þingvellir

Open 24 hoursFree4.7(24,575)

Arrive around 8:30am and take the marked path from the main viewpoint through the rift landscape. Stand at the overlook first for the broad lake view, then walk toward the historic assembly area; sturdy shoes matter when the path is wet or icy.

Geysir Geothermal Area, Haukadalur

Open 24 hoursFree4.7(4,817)

Reach the geothermal field late morning and wait by Strokkur's roped viewing area for an eruption rather than walking away after one quiet minute. Keep behind every barrier, then loop the smaller steaming vents before returning to the car.

Afternoon

Gullfoss Waterfall, Bláskógabyggð

Free4.9(648)

Use the upper path first for the safest full panorama, then descend toward the lower viewing area only if the surface and seasonal access are comfortable. Wear waterproof layers and stand back from the spray instead of chasing the closest edge.

Friðheimar Greenhouse, Reykholt

Daily 11:30 AM – 4:00 PM$354.7(5,492)

Book the 1:30pm lunch and order the tomato soup with bread, then add a drink if you want to sample the greenhouse-grown ingredients. Sit among the plants for the atmosphere, but keep the visit focused because the kitchen closes at 4:00pm.

Evening

Kerið Crater, Grímsnes

$54.5(20,595)

Arrive while there is still direct daylight, pay the 700 ISK entrance fee, and walk the rim before taking the path down to the lake. Stand on the higher rim for the red caldera and blue-green water, and skip the descent if ice makes the stairs slippery.

3 vs 5 vs 7 days in Reykjavik

Two days covers Reykjavik and the classic Golden Circle. More time gives you room for Iceland's longer coastal drives and slower weather planning.
