Where to Stay in Reykjavík

For a first trip, base yourself in Miðborg or Skólavörðuholt: both keep Reykjavík’s sights, food and tour pickups walkable. Choose the core for nightlife, or trade a short walk for calmer streets and better value. Here is how each base compares.

Reykjavik in brief

What is the best part of Reykjavík to stay in?

Miðborg around Laugavegur is the best default for first-time visitors. It puts major sights, restaurants, nightlife and tour-pickup points within walking distance, with Skólavörðuholt the best calmer alternative.

Should I stay in Reykjavík or Keflavík?

Stay in Reykjavík for sightseeing, dining and most of your Iceland trip. Choose Keflavík mainly for a late international arrival or an early departure, when being nearer Keflavík International Airport is more useful than being in the capital.

How many days in Reykjavík is enough?

Two to three nights is enough to explore the central sights, eat well and use Reykjavík as a launch point for guided day trips. Add more nights if the city is your base for several excursions or you want a slower pace.

How to choose where to stay in Reykjavík

Reykjavík is compact, so the decision is less about finding a perfect transport line and more about how close you want to be to the action. Miðborg and the streets around Hallgrímskirkja are the safest first-trip defaults, with most central sights, restaurants and tour pickups on foot. Grandi and Vesturbær add waterfront character, while Laugardalur trades convenience for pools, green space and easier parking. Vatnsmýri sits between the centre and the domestic airport. The table below compares the main bases by vibe, walking access, price and practical transport.

Before you book

Reykjavík stay essentials

  • Airport transfers

For international arrivals, plan around your hotel’s bus-transfer stop rather than assuming a door-to-door drop-off. Miðborg, Skólavörðuholt and Vatnsmýri are especially practical around BSÍ; confirm the exact stop before booking.

  • Do you need a car?

Not for Reykjavík itself. Central bases are walkable and parking is limited or paid. A car becomes more useful for day trips, especially if you choose Laugardalur or plan to leave the city early.

  • Staying outside the core

Laugardalur has Strætó connections, but buses add planning and time after dinner. If your trip is only a few nights, pay for central walkability unless pool access, parking or family space is the priority.

  • One base or split stay?

Keep one Reykjavík base for a short city visit. Split only when a longer Iceland itinerary includes a deliberate rural overnight, since changing hotels within compact Reykjavík rarely saves meaningful travel time.
